Rev. William Wye Smith (1826-1917) was a Scottish-born Canadian poet, editor, and minister.[1]

Life[]

Smith was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.[1]

He was ordained as a Congregationalist minister.[1]

He was a recognized expert on the Scots language, who served as the authority for the Scottish Appendix of the Standard Dictionary, and who translated the New Testament into Scots.

At various times he was editor of the Owen Sound Times, Canadian Independent, Sunday School Times, and Congregational Year Book. He also published several small volumes of poetry.[1]

He died in Burford, Ontario.[1]
