Vic Elias

Vic Elias (1948 - May 18, 2006) was an American-born Canadian poet and physicist.

Life[]

Elias was born in Chicago, Illinois.[1]

He emigrated to Canada in 1979, and settled in London, Ontario, in 1985.[1]

He was a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Western Ontario (UWO), who twice served as director of UWO's Theoretical Physics program, and an affiliate member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario.[1]

Elias was an accomplished poet whose work appeared in a number of literary publications including Parchment, Tabula Rasa, and Afterthoughts. He is the author of 3 full-length collections and a chapbook of poetry.

He was married to D'Vorah Elias, and the father of 4 children: Gabriel, Rebecca, Leonard and Nathan.[1]

Writing[]

His poems dealt with his Jewish identity and spiritual themes, humorous anecdotes, and in his final works, his struggle with cancer, which took his life in May 2006.[1]

Recognition[]

In 1997 Elias received the Edward G. Pleva Award for Excellence in Teaching, UWO's highest teaching award.[1]

Elias was honored with a poetry festival held at UWO on October 2, 2005.[2]
