Steven L. Orlen (January 13, 1942 - November 16, 2010)[1] was an American poet and academic.[2]

Life[]

Orlen was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the son of Florence Beatrice and Milton H. Orlen.[1] He grew up in Holyoke. He earned a B.A. in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the Iowa Writers' Workshop.[2]

He was a professor at the University of Arizona, where he founded the creative writing program.[2] He served as visiting professor at the University of Houston, Goddard College, and Warren Wilson College.[3]

Recognition[]

He received Poetry magazine’s George Dillon Memorial Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and an Arizona Commission on the Arts grant.[2]
