Roy Temple House (1878-1963) was an American poet and academic.[1]

Life[]

House was born in Nebraska. He earned degrees from Miami University, the University of Michigan, and Montpelier University in France. In 1917 he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.[1]

He became head of the modern language department at Southwestern State Normal School in 1905. In 1911, he joined the University of Oklahoma (U of O), and became chair of its modern languages department in 1918.[1] He served as department head until his retirement in 1942.[2]

During World War I he served on the Commission for Relief in Belgium.[1]

In 1927 he founded the quarterly, Books Abroad, at U of O.[1] The publication soon attained an international reputation, being cited in 1929 by the League of Nations for its "contribution to the exchange of thought throughout the Western world." It continues to publish, under the title World Literature Today.[2]

He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1948.[1] In the same year he was nominated by the South Central Modern Language Association for the Nobel Peace Prize.[2]
