Penn Kemp (born 1944) is a Canadian sound poet, novelist, and playwright.
Life[]
Kemp was born in Strathroy, and raised in London, Ontario.[1]
She earned an honors degree in 1966, and a teaching certificate in 1968, from the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in London.[2]
She then taught English in Timmins and North York, Ontario, until 1970.[1]
Due to her interest in mythology, she has travelled extensively in Europe, North Africa, Mexico, South America and India. She lived for 9 years on Toronto Island. In 1988-1989 she earned an M.Ed. at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Toronto.[1] She moved back to London in 2001.[3]
She has been writer in residence both in her hometown, London (at UWO), and around the world, including in: Buffalo, NY; Findhorn, Scotland; Flesherton, Ontario; University of Rondonia, Brazil; and in India at the University of Mumbai, SNDT in Mumbai, and the University of Baroda.[3]
Recognition[]
In 2010 Kemp became London's inaugural poet laureate.[3]
In 2012 she was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to the arts.[4]
