Marie Murray Harris[1] (born November 7, 1943) is an American poet,[2] who served as Poet Laureate of New Hampshire.
Life[]
Harris was born in New York City, the daughter of Marie (Murray) and Basil Harris.[2] She began writing poetry at 8 years old.[3]
She attended Georgetown University, 1961-63, and the University of North Carolina, 1967-68., before earning a B.A. from Goddard College in 1971.[2]
Harris was an early member of poetry co-operative Alice James Books.[4]
She was the administrator of the New Hampshire Commission on the Arts Poet-in-the-Schools Program, 1972-1976.[2]
She has worked as a copywriter for Maximus Advertising in Exeter, New Hampshire, since 1977, and has been a partner in business-to-business communications services firm Isinglass Marketing since 1979.[2]
In 1993, as poet laureate of her state, she organized the 1st-ever gathering of state poets laureate.[4]
Harris married poet William Matthew in 1963, a marriage that ended in divorce;[1] and photographer Charter Weeks in 1977.[2] She was the mother of 2 boys by her 1st marriage, William and Sebastian (poet Sebastian Matthews),[1] and the adoptive mother of Manny Weeks.

Harris served as Poet Laureate of New Hampshire from 1999 to 2004.[4]
