Rev. Alice Goodman (born 1958) is an American poet and librettist. She is also an Anglican priest, working in England.[1]

Life[]

Goodman was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and attended and graduated from Breck School. She was educated at Harvard University and Cambridge where she studied English and American literature.

She was raised as a Reform Jew, but converted to Christianity as an adult. She received a Master of Divinity degree from the Boston University School of Theology.

She married English poet Geoffrey Hill in 1987. The couple have a daughter.[2]

Career[]

She wrote the libretti for 2 of the operas of John Adams, Nixon in China (1987) and The Death of Klinghoffer (1991). The second opera was widely condemned for juxtaposing the murder of Klinghoffer by Palestinian terrorists, and the condition of the Palestinians under Israeli occupation; "two of the five opera companies (the Los Angeles Festival and Glyndebourne) that had commissioned the work withdrew their planned productions. After 9/11, Boston Symphony Orchestra cancelled a performance of extracts." Goodman was "condemned to obscurity for nearly two decades.[3]

Goodman resumed writing with John Adams on the opera Doctor Atomic, however she withdrew from this project after a year.

In 2006, Goodman took up the post of chaplain at Trinity College, Cambridge,[4] and in 2011 became rector of a group of parishes in Cambridgeshire including Fulbourn.
